Mobile payment apps in China

For international participants, we recommend you to setup mobile payment ahead of your travel!

Here are instructions to setup Alipay on your mobile phone. (Or seehttps://www.trip.com/guide/phone/how-to-use-alipay.html). You can use it for

  • everyday purchases at almost all occasions.
  • train tickets, flights.
  • Take-outs and food delivery.
  • bike-sharing, subway, taxi, etc.

and here is the interface. You can use it to scan the bar code at vendor ("Scan"), or show the payment barcode ("Pay") to the vendor

    1. Download Alipay (Not AlipayHK) from app store.

    2. Registration & Verification

    • Phone Number: Use aninternational number(with country code, e.g., +1…) to receive SMS.

    • Verification Code: Enter the code sent via SMS.

    • Set Password: Create a 6-digitpayment password(different from login password).

    3. Identity Authentication (Mandatory)

    • Go toMe --> Settings (or your name icon) --> Account & Security --> Identity Verification --> Upload passport & Verify face.
    • Upload a photo of yourpassportand fill in personal details. This step is mandatory forhigher transaction limits.

    4. Link Your International Card

    • Tap“Bank Cards”under theMetab.
    • Add your Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Discover, or Diners Club card. Alipay now supports most major foreign cards.
    • Confirm via your bank’s authentication process (e.g., OTP text).

    5. Key Features to Use

    • Payments:

      • Scan QR Codes: Tap "Scan" to pay at stores.

      • Show Your Code: Tap "Pay/Collect" for merchants to scan.

    • Transportation:

      • Metro/Bus: To use Public transportation with Alipay, first make sure youswitch to the right cityat the top left corner of the app.

        Then, under"Transport", add a local city card (e.g., Wuhan Tong). May require a deposit.
      • Taxis: Access taxi via"Didi Taxi"in the app.
    • Other Services: Flights, hotels, movies, and more...
