Description

Abstract: The LHCb Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detectors provide essential charged-hadron identification over a wide momentum range, supporting key flavor physics measurements, including studies of CP violation and rare decays. For Run 1 and Run 2, the RICH system combined aerogel and gas radiators with hybrid photon detectors (HPDs). The Upgrade I for Run 3 introduced a new RICH1 optical system, fast multi-anode photomultiplier tubes (MaPMTs), and redesigned front-end electronics, enabling operation at higher luminosity while maintaining excellent particle identification performance. For Upgrade II, picosecond-level timing and new front-end electronics will further enhance particle identification under even more demanding conditions. This contribution reviews the evolution of the LHCb RICH detectors, highlighting key technological advances, performance achievements, and future challenges.

About the speaker: Antonis Papanestis is a particle physicist with over 25 years of experience in detector development, detector control systems, and large-scale project management. Originally from Greece, he earned his MSc in Physics from the University of Ioannina before serving as a communications specialist in the Greek Army. He received his Ph.D. from University College London in medical applications of particle physics detectors. In 1998, he joined INFN Pisa as a Marie Curie Fellow, contributing to the CMS experiment and novel gas micro-pattern detectors. Since joining RAL in 2000, Antonis has contributed to reconstruction software and detector control systems, and led the LHCb RICH sub-system for six years during Run 1 and Run 2. From 2019 to 2021, he managed the DUNE-UK project, overseeing a major investment by the UK government. He currently leads the RAL LHCb group's activities in RICH operations and the Mighty Pixel project for Upgrade II. Outside work, Antonis enjoys reading science fiction, riding roller coasters with his sons, and giving public talks on developments in physics and the achievements of CERN scientists.
